WHY YOU STRUGGLE WITH YOUR DIET
Now you know what to look out for first when fat loss is your goal. Here’s a reminder if you need it: you need to be calorie deficit. But, why folks often struggle with their diet is because they assume that if a little calorie deficit is good, a massive calorie deficit must be even better.
Getting into calorie deficit doesn’t mean that you should go on a 500 calorie diet of old apple cores and air dried kale leaves. Yes it does work, but only until it doesn’t.
Your body is wicked smart. When you cut calories your body will eventually adapt to the lower calorie requirements and your fat loss results will plateau. To get out of the plateau you will have to keep readjusting your calories or activity levels each time this happens. Now, if you’ve cut your calories to ultra low in the beginning it is harder to keep going lower each time the next plateau hits. If you want sustainable results without sacrificing your health, there is only so low you should go with calories.
Although we want rapid fat loss we also want to stay healthy and achieve results that last for a long time. If your calories hit rock bottom I can guarantee that you will not be able to keep your results. It is too challenging both physiologically and psychologically. Best case scenario is that you’ll look good for a fleeting moment until you’re back to your old, unimproved self.
And the worse case? Well…
Following a constant ultra-low calorie diet is extremely challenging mentally, making you more likely to binge eat. Not only will this stop or reverse your fat loss efforts, it can be damaging to your health. When eating a ultra-low calorie diet your body will only care about keeping the absolute basic bodily functions working. Meaning it only cares about keeping your brain and other important organs alive from day to day. And keeping the organs alive is a whole lot different than being the pinnacle of health.
When fat loss is the goal calorie deficit is where the money’s at, we’ve already established that. But a long-term ultra low calorie diet can lead to a host of issues including metabolic damage, compromised immune system and eating disorders. All of which, in case you were wondering, are as much fun as getting into a rollercoaster with a full bucket of running chainsaws.
